Azzurro by Daigo Marumoto (Japan) – Compositions for Mandolin…

Recently I have listened to videos of the composition Azzurro for solo mandolin by Daigo Marumoto. This is a nice, dreamy composition for the mandolin, and so there are quite some videos of this composition played by the best Japanese mandolin players.

My favorite video besides the version by Masataka Hori at the beginning of the playlist is the following – with some reverb added to the sound which makes it sound like played in a big hall – and you can see the right hand of the player very well:

There is also a video where this piece is played on a mandola. The mandolin solo version by Tatiana Cro – one of the few mandolin players not from Japan in this playlist – is also very good, but the sound is very noisy, so it is not much fun to listen to it with headphones…

Daigo Marumoto has also composed two versions of Azzurro for mandolin orchestra. This is the fantastic, incredible version with the Japanese mandolin orchestra Arte Mandolinistica conducted by Yasunobo Inoue:

丸本大悟 / AZZURRO /ARTE MANDOLINISTICA+ARTE TOKYO

You can find the mandolin orchestra versions also in my playlist, including the video played by the GCEA mandolin orchestra from Madeira which plays only the second part.

Mandolin' Club de Paris Disques Festival - Postcard mandolin orchestra

The Mandolin’ Club de Paris – Videos, a Postcard…

The Mandolin’ Club de Paris was a very successful mandolin orchestra which has recorded several albums. The orchestra was conducted by Jeanne Ricada Mathorez (1887 – 1980). A recording of the orchestra has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque in 1954.

I have found two albums by the Mandolin’ Club at Spotify. I have listened to those two albums – and I must say that the recordings are made very well. The mandolin orchestra is using flutes, castagnettes, Hawaii guitar or the piano as additional instruments to make the performences interesting.

I have recently found two great videos with the Mandolin’ Club de Paris at youtube – you should really watch those videos! By the way – Ricada Mathorez (born in 1887) is aged 80 in the second video, and almost 87 in the first!

I do also own a postcard of the Mandolin’ Club with their instruments nicely decorated in front of the orchestra. I have made a small gallery withthe 3 pictures – just click on one of the picture to open the gallery:

I do not know how long the Mandolin’ Club de Paris has existed. Ricada Mathorez died in 1980, probably the club stopped playing some years after those videos were made.

Clayton’s Grand March by C. D. Blake – Free…

In my sheet music archive I have an edition of  Clayton’s Grand March by Charles Dupee Blake (Sep. 13, 1847 — Nov. 23, 1903), arranged for mandolin orchestra by F. Kollmaneck. Als the copyright of this sheet music has expired I have made a scan of the sheet music – check the free download link below.

Clayton’s Grand March has been published in 1878. The sheet music can be found in two sheet music collections (see below).

C. D. Blake was a very popular composer and he has composed many popular pieces. You can find some information about C. D. Blake in the Petrucci Library.

I have found the following historical recording of the March played by the Victor Military Band in the Archive of thre Library of Congress:

There are some videos of piano versions, including version for 4 hands and 6 hands at youtube. I have compiled some videos in the following playlist:
