The Hooters – Great Songs with Mandolins, Accordion, Recorder…

The Hooters are one of the bands that have been playing their music since the 1980s and who are still very active and successful with their music. And the Hooters are one of the bands who make use of the mandolin in their songs. Eric Bazilian plays the mandolin or mandola, John Lilly plays mandolin too in some songs. The Hooters do also use the recorder, the accorion or the melodica in their songs.

Some of the songs by the Hooters are well known and very popular, like Johnny B., All you Zombies or Satellite.

There are some live videos from the 1980, but I haven’t discovered a video with the mandolin from that time. But in the videos from recent years I have found many examples of songs with one or two mandolins. In some videos Eric Bazilian plays a doubleneck instrument with electric mandolin and guitar.

Let’s start with the song Karla with a K which has a long introduction with mandolin and accordion:

The Hooters – “karla with a k”

Another famous song is Johnny B. which starts with a recorder melody:

Washington D.C., The Bluegrass Capitol – The Story of…

There are not so many documentations about Bluegrass available. This is a high quality  24 minute video about Bluegrass in Washington, D. C.

Washington D.C., The Bluegrass Capitol – The Story of Bluegrass in Washington, D.C.

I created this video when I was in graduate school pursuing an MFA in film. I have been working on a feature length documentary on The Seldom Scene for several years (I submitted a cut of it as my MFA thesis project) and for this project I interviewed Mike Auldridge (again), Dudley Connell (again), George McCeney, and Len Holslcaw. I will be uploading a few clips from my Seldom Scene documentary in progress over the next few days. With the recent passing of Mike Auldridge, I remembered countless conversations with Mike over the last twenty years or so and the three times I interviewed him on camera. I shot this interview with Mike in April 2004 and it is my favorite interview with Mike. He truly was what everyone has said he was– a true gentleman and a class act all the way. And thanks to Dudley Connell, Len Holsclaw and George McCeney as well.

The Waiakea Intermediate Ukulele Band – More than 40…

The Waiakea Intermediate School has a Ukulele Band which had its 40th anniversary in 2010. The school still offers this ukulele band as well as a concert band. The band plays pieces like Hilo March, Under The Double Eagle March, Jingle Bells, Carol of the Bells an has made tours to the USA and to Japan. I have not found newer videos of this ukulele band, but I found that the band still plays from time to time.

It’s fun to watch the boys and girls play with their ukuleles and dance a difficult dance from the Philipines.

Sugar in the Gourd – A great fiddle tune

Today I have played some tunes from Butch Baldassari’s book 30 Fiddle Tunes for Mandolin Taught by Butch Baldassari – including a tune named “Sugar in the Gourd” which was fun to play.

I have looked for some youtube videos and found some great performances of this tune as well as some very old recordings like the following recorded in 1930:

SUGAR IN THE GOURD by Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers with Riley Puckett and Clayton McMichen. Recorded in 1930. Good, old timey foot stompin’ hillbilly music. Enjoy!

Sugar in the Gourd is an oldtime tune, but it is also a tune that can be played in a bluegrass style. It is mostly played by the fiddle, the other instruments are mostly playing the acompaniment.

I recommend that you listen to my playlist and select your favorite version of the tune. The tune is a fast tune, a good tune to practice speed.

Sugar in the gourd was the song of the week in the Mandolin Cafe in May 2012 – in the thread about this tune you can find more information and other videos with mandolins.

Sheet music

I can recommend the Butch Baldassari book – the tunes are all great to play and the CD that comes with the book helps to play the tunes properly.
