El Choclo – Discover the Famous Tango by Ángel…

On the Virtual Gramophone site I found a recording of El Choclo – the famous tango written by Ángel Villoldo at the beginning of the 20th century – probably the most famous tango at all.

This tango has a long history, and many artists have created their very special versions – it is fascinating to follow El Choclo through this musical history.

I remembered that Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker had also played El Choclo in a video and so I decided to write about El Choclo today.

I have compiled some interesting videos, links to interesting articles about El Choclo and sources where you can find sheet music for this tune.

Enjoy El Choclo!

Tango en Skai – Roland Dyens – A Great…

Some time ago I have found a nice video with a mandolin version of a piece with titel Tango en Skai played by the Japanese mandolin player Kozo Onishi. I had not heard this piece before, but I liked it immediately.

This is one of the two videos of Tango en Skai by Kozo Onishi played on the mandolin:

Tango en Skai – Kozo Onishi – Mandolin version

I wanted to know more about this piece so I looked for information and other videos. Tango en Skai was composed by Roland Dyens, who is a guitarist and composer and there is a video of Tango en Skai played by himself:

Tango en Skai – Roland Dyens

A second video shows Roland Dyens together with Thomas Viloteau during a workshop in Los Angeles:

Roland Dyens & Thomas Viloteau: Tango en Skai

Liverecording GFA Convention 2007, Los Angeles. By permission of the Artists

In the last video Tango en Skai is played by the young Japanese guitarist Kaori Mujari. This shows that Tango en Skai is also vey popular in Japan, maybe Kozo Onishi was inspired by a video like this to play this tune on the mandolin.

I have collected other versions of this often played piece in my playlist. You can find versions with other instruments as well, including accordion versions, guitar ensemble, violin and guitar. marimbaphone, …

domra

Victor Solomin – Domra / Electric Domra – Astor…

Last year I watched some videos of Victor Solomin and his band. Victor plays the domra, but he does not only play traditional and classical music on his domra, but also a lot of jazz with his band.

Today I found a new video of Victor Solomin with a great performance of Libertango by Astor Piazzolla played on the domra with piano accompanyment:

Victor Solomin Fantazia to Libertango by Astor Piazzolla Victor Solomin domra Alexey Bogolubov piano

I first found Victor Solomin’s profile when I looked for recordings of Stings song Fragile. Victor Solomin played a fantastic version of Fragile on his Domra:

Fragile (Sting) – Played by Victor Solomin and his Band – Domra

You can also find an interesting version of “Spain” by Chick Corea and many more jazz videos, also a set of classical performances of compositions by J. S. Bach and Schmittke

Totally different is the following new song by Nadin Branitskaya and the Solomin Band:

Astor Piazzolla – Histoire du Tango – Liuqin (Chinese…

The music composed by Astor Piazzolla is famous around the world, especially the three pieces from Histoire du tango are played very often. And very often those pieces are played with mandolin and guitar.

In Taiwan YaHui Chen und YunChang Dong have played tose three pieces in a concert with chines 4-stringed mandolin liuqin and guitar, the three videos of this performance can be found at youtube.

I have presented the Chinese mandolin liuqin in my German blog, I will translate this article also the English – give me some time. However you can look at the embedded videos from the following thread:
