Congratulations to 20 Years Mandolin Orchestra Het Consort

The mandolin orchestra Het Consort from the Netherlands was founded 20 years ago. On October 16, 2010 a big  anniversary concert will be given in Amsterdam.

The orchestra has produced an impressive 15 minute video about the past 20 years, with some great music examples and a lot of information about the orchestra.

During the past 20 years the members of the orchestra have been instructed by the best teachers on several occasions and the orchestra has reached the highest quality. The orchestra has made trips to many European countries as well as to the USA. Several original compositions were composed for and premiered by the orchestra.

Congratulations for 20 years successful work to the mandolin orchestra Het Consort!

Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker – Amsterdams Mandoline en Gitaar…

Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker are the Amsterdams Mandoline en Gitaar Duo. I have met them several times during the last years – sometimes together with there parents – and it has always been a great fun and experience to jam with them until late at night.

Marijke has studied mandolin in Wuppertal, and Michiel has studied the classical guitar. They are playing a broad selection of bluegrass, blues, folk, classical and jazz – and I like their style very much.

They have recorded several CDs and composed many new tunes for mandolin and guitar. Marijke often plays her old Gibson A mandolin, but sometimes she does also play her electric Rickenbacker mandolin. They have taken part in the mandolin symposium in California and they are teaching in Germany and the Netherlands.

I am very happy that there are several nice videos of Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker from workshops and concerts in the Netherlands and from the mandolin symposium.

Here is a selection of the videos:

Xtra strings – Peaches & Regalia (Frank Zappa)

Xtra strings – Flatbush Waltz (Andy Statman)

Duo Verso – Great Music for Panflute and Guitar

In my last post I wrote about the German panflute virtuoso Ulrich Herkenhoff. Unfortunately I did not find a video with panflute and guitar or mandolin by Ulrich Herkenhoff, but I found the videos of the Duo Verso from the Netherlands. This is a text from the homepage of the Duo verso:

Verso was formed in 1997; its two members are panflute player Matthijs Koene and guitarist Stefan Gerritsen.

The outstanding expression of the instruments is put to use in a very broad range of styles, from Dowland, Giuliani and Piazzolla, to the newest music by Theo Loevendie, Artyum Kim, Daan Manneke, Gerard Beljon, and Louis Aguirre among others. In their programmes, the music especially written for Verso is placed next to classical compositions, which sound surprisingly authentic.

The Duo Verso plays a very interesting repertoir of music for panflute and guitar  from the 16th century until today. Many composers wrote new original compositions especially for the Duo Verso.

The first video that I found was the following version of Nightclub 1960 by Astor Piazolla in the version for panflute and guitar.

The second video is even more interesting. It’s almost unbelievable which sounds can be produced by this instrument.

On the homepage of the Duo Verso you can find some other videos and several audio files. One example that I did also like very much is the version of the Lachrimae Pavan by John Dowland and Jakob van Eyck. Also available is a recording of the piece that gave the name to the duo: Verso, composed by Ron Ford for the Duo Verso.

Verso was formed in 1997; its two members are panflute player Matthijs Koene and guitarist Stefan Gerritsen. The duo was named after the work Verso, which was written for them by the American-Dutch composer Ron Ford. Passionately and with a sense of style the duo performs classical music, as well as contemporary repertoire. Appreciation for the duo is not only expressed by the audience, but is also demonstrated by the commendations of juries at international contests and the many prizes that the duo has won:

Enjoy panflute and guitar with the fantastic Duo Verso!

Mandolin and Organ – Benny Ludemann

I found those two pieces for mandolin and church organ recently. Both pieces are taken from a recording with religious music which was recorded in the 1980s by Benny Ludemann (mandolin) and Klaas Jan Mulder (organ).

Benny Ludemann is a mandolin and guitar player from the Netherlands. He has made many appearances in radio and TV. He is teaching mandolin and guitar and has made a big contribution to the mandolin orchestra association of the Netherlands NVvMO

The mandolin part ist played with tremolo. Please enjoy this rare combination of mandolin and organ.

I have found one other video with Benny Ludemann from a TV show, Benny Ludemann plays the guitar in a piece named 24 Roses. This is the first video in the following playlist about Benny Ludemann:
