Jean and Janvier Pietrapertosa – Father and Son –…

Jean und Janvier Pietrapertosa belong to the mandolin players and mandolin teachers that helped to make the mandolin popular in the region of Paris in France around 1900.Both have written important mandolin methods , they have composed their own pieces and and arranged the popular music of the time.

Until today not much is known about the biographies of father and son Pietrapertosa. In many cases no difference is made between the two as if it was just one person namend J. Pietrapertosa.

I have recently found a document – a dictionary about the contemporaries – that contains short biographies of both – the father Jean Pietrapertosa and his son Janvier Pietrapertosa. The book that can be found in the French National Library bnf is dated to 1906, the copy from archive.org is dated to some years later.

Father: Jean-Ferdinand-Salvator Pietrapertosa

PIETRAPERTOSA (Jean-Ferdinand-Salvator)

Musicien, né à Naples (Italie) le 10 juin 1855.

Déjà, dans sa ville natale où il accomplit ses études, M. Pietrapertosa s’était fait connaître comme mandoliniste solo, lorsqu’en 1882, il vint en France, où il acclimata bientôt son instrument, qui y était presque tombé en oubli. Il devint, peu de temps après, mandoliniste solo de l’Opéra-Comique, puis de l’Opéra.

M. Pietrapertosa a écrit plusieurs compositions pour la mandoline, dont les plus importantes sont la Nuit d’automne et la Marche du Mandoliniste. Il est l’auteur, en collaboration avec M. Alissa, de la musique de Mariage galante, opéra-comique de MM. Oswald et Boucheron, représenté à l’Olympia en 1892, et d’une Méthode de Mandoline.

On lui doit aussi l’invention d’un système perfectionné de mandoline et d’un pupitre-pédale.

Naturalisé français en 1892, M. Pietrapertosa est décoré du Medjidié et de divers autres ordres.

Musician,born in Naples (Italy) on Juni 10, 1855.

Already, in his hometown where he completed his studies, Mr. Pietrapertosa had made himself known as a solo mandolinist, when in 1882 he came to France, where he soon acclimated his instrument, which had almost fallen into oblivion. He became, shortly thereafter, solo mandolinist of the Opéra-Comique, then of the Opera.

Pietrapertosa has written several compositions for the mandolin, the most important of which are the “Nuit d’automne” and “Marche du Mandoliniste” . He is the author, in collaboration with M. Alissa, of the music of Mariage galante, opéra-comique by MM. Oswald and Boucheron, represented at Olympia in 1892, and a Mandolin Method.

He also owes the invention of an improved system of mandolin and a pedal console.

The Mandolin Method by Giuseppe Branzoli (1875) – Compositions…

I have recently added a new page about the mandolin method by Giuseppe Branzoli on my page about mandolin methods.

I have also made a new scan of the first volume of the German edition of Branzoli’s mandolin methodwhich has been published at the beginning of the 20th century by Universal Edition. This scan in high quality is now available as download on the musicaneo.com site.

On this occasion I have searched for videos with compositions by Branzoli.

The Mandolin Methods by Gabriele Leone, Giovanni Fouchetti and…

Three mandolin methods from the 18th century, the methods by Gabriele Leone, Giovanni Fouchetti and Pietro Denis are now available at musicaneo.com. The printed edition by Edition Minkoff is no more available as the Minkoff company has ceised in 2010.

Those methods can be used to study the mandolin technique used in the 18th century when the mandolin has been very popular for some time. The methods include descriptions (in French language), exercises and many pieces for one or two mandolins.

I have collected some interesting videos with music by Gabriele Leone, Giovanni Fouchetti and Pietro Denis below the title pages of the three methods.

Here is the beginning of the text about Cristofaro:

Cristofaro, Ferdinando, de, born in Naples, the home of the
mandolin, in 1846, died in Paris, April 18, 1890. The son of
respectable parents in Naples, Cristofaro rose to be one of the
most celebrated mandolin virtuosi of modern times. He received
his musical education in the Conservatory of his native city,
devoting himself to the study of the piano, and had his life been
spared, his fame as a virtuoso on that instrument would have
extended far beyond his achievements as a mandolinist. Cristofaro
was entirely self-taught on the mandolin, and he soon distinguished
himself by his performances on this instrument in Italy. To the
Neapolitans, he introduced a new and completely advanced method
of playing — accustomed as they were to hearing the instrument in
the hands of strolling players, used more for accompanying popular
songs than anything else — the classical compositions, executed by
Cristofaro, caused unbounded enthusiasm, astonishment, and
admiration. His fame spread rapidly throughout his native land,
and after appearing with success in all the important cities, he was
induced to visit Paris. It was in 1882 that he arrived in this city,
where he was immediately recognised as the premier mandolinist
of the day ; he won a widespread and enviable reputation, and as a
teacher, his services were in constant demand by French aristocracy.
During his residence in Paris, he appeared in public with the most
prominent musicians of the time — M. Gounod, upon several
occasions playing the pianoforte accompaniments to his solos. In
1888, Cristofaro visited London, and here he met with his usual
success, and was sought in this city also as a teacher, and was
appointed conductor of the " Ladies' Guitar and Mandolin Band."

Cristofaro was the author of a most com-
prehensive and artistic method for the mandolin. It consists of
two volumes, each being published in five languages: English,
French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, and treats of the
instrument fully, and is illustrated by numerous diagrams. It
commences with the elements of the theory of music, and all the
exercises are melodious and arranged with a definite object : they
are well -graded and admirably suited for pupil and teacher,, as
the majority are written as duets for two mandolins. Several of
these studies deserve special notice for their beauty of melody and
form, among such, we mention particularly, the Andante maestoso,
Larghetto, Andante religioso, in double stopping, and Allegro
giusto, style fugue, all in the second volume. The method was
published in November, 1884, by Lemoine, Paris, and it had
reached the twelfth edition previous to the death of of its author in
1890. Cristofaro had previously written a method for the mandolin
when he was living in Naples, before he was thirty years of age,
this being published in 1873, by Cottrau of that city.

An original Mandolin Pick from the 19th Century!

After I had prepared the method for download I tried to find once again informations about Cristofaro with searching the internet – and I found one very interesting article. A collector of vintage guitar picks has bought some old picks from a seller in France.One of thepicks is stamed with “Cristofaro – Paris” which made him curious. He found the information about Ferdinado de Cristofaro (i guess that he got it from Bone’s book) which brought him to the conclusion that this pick  must have been produce at the time when Cristofaro’s mandolin method was published, abd probably befor Cristofaro’s death – somtime between 1884 and 1990. This pick has been made from celluloid – so it may be the oldest pick made from celloloid.
