Show of Hands – Steve Knightley and Phil Beer…

I have a very old mandolin record by Phil Beer that I have bought many years ago, but I did not hear anything about Phil Beer since I bought this record.

Now a just found a note about Show of Hands who are touring through the north of Germany, and found out, that Show of Hands is composed of Phil Beer and Steve Knightley. So I was very curious to find out how Show of Hands sounds – and I was not disappointed.

From the Show of Hands homepage:

Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England. Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and playing all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia and India. Voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country and trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro.

Here are three videos with Show of Hands:

Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker – Amsterdams Mandoline en Gitaar…

Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker are the Amsterdams Mandoline en Gitaar Duo. I have met them several times during the last years – sometimes together with there parents – and it has always been a great fun and experience to jam with them until late at night.

Marijke has studied mandolin in Wuppertal, and Michiel has studied the classical guitar. They are playing a broad selection of bluegrass, blues, folk, classical and jazz – and I like their style very much.

They have recorded several CDs and composed many new tunes for mandolin and guitar. Marijke often plays her old Gibson A mandolin, but sometimes she does also play her electric Rickenbacker mandolin. They have taken part in the mandolin symposium in California and they are teaching in Germany and the Netherlands.

I am very happy that there are several nice videos of Marijke and Michiel Wiesenekker from workshops and concerts in the Netherlands and from the mandolin symposium.

Here is a selection of the videos:

Larry Keel and Adam Aijala – A Flatpicking Guitar…

Larry Keel and Adam Aijala are two great guitarists who play in various bands and styles. I have dicscovered them as a duo from a podcast which is no more available. Larry Keel and Adam Aijala have played as a duo in 2009 and 2010.

You can find a recording of a concert of Larry Keel and Adam Aijala in good quality on the archive.org website:

Larry Keel

From his bio on the official hompage:

Over the years Larry Keel has become a world-class flatpicking guitarist, and that talent has earned him legendary status with fans and the highest respect amongst his musical peers. In recent performances Larry has led bands involving such industry icons as Tony Rice, Jack Lawrence, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Curtis Burch (New Grass Revival), Vassar Clements, Joe Craven, Jim Lauderdale, Eddie Adcock;

Adam Aijala

Adam Aijala plays guitar in the Yonder Mountain String Band (YMSB). On their homepage I found the following:

As a young teen, Adam loved skateboarding and listening to punk and hardcore music.

He learned power chords first, playing dozens of short punk tunes. In his early years of high school, he added metal bands like Metallica and Slayer to his repertoire. Shortly after, Adam’s musical tastes began to shift. He began listening to Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and even the Grateful Dead. Desiring a new sound, Adam picked up his first acoustic guitar at age 17.

I have compiled a playlist with Larry Keel and Adam Aijala, but the audio quality is not so good on most of the videos.
