Duo Conversa – Lydie Barrancos (Flute) and Pascal Bournet…

I have recently found a note about the Duo Conversa at twitter. The Duo Conversa is composed of Lydie Barrancos (flute) and Pascal Bournet (guitar). The duo plays music from South America and from Ireland, a great selection with good arrangements.

With its original repertoire of creations and arrangements around themes from the whole world, Conversa offers you a journey throughout flute’s and guitar’s tones.

The flute, instrument of all times, and the guitar, intrument of all continents, bring into echo the multiplicity of the world cultures’ original sounds.

Conversa will accompany us in an authentic and universal dialogue and then will echo in each of us the emotional world of us all.

Pascal Bournet has arranged all the pieces for flute and guitar. Most of the pieces have been published and are available, you can find the details on his website. Some of the pieces have been composed byPatrick Bournet, the brother of Pascal and a guitarist as well.

In the youtube channel of Pascal Bournetyou can also find some interesting pieces for clarinet and guitar as well as solo pieces for the guitar and duos for two guitars.

The Canadian Duo “Fire & Smoke” – A Great…

A great concert by the Canadian duo Fire & Smoke is available on the CBC concerts on demand site.

The duo is composed of  Claire Morrison and Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner. The speciality of this duo are the songs in two languages, English and French.

Daniel accompanies the songs with the guitar, but he uses the banjo or the mandolin too for some songs. Claire plays some great flute solos.

This is the official video of teh song “If Only” at vimeo:

“If Only” by FIRE & SMOKE

Concert Fire & Smoke at the CBC:

Claire Morrison and Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner met in 2010, around a campfire at the infamous campground of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. They quickly realized there was musical chemistry between the two of them. After that first meeting, Daniel tried to track down Claire to find out if she would be interested in working with him. Once he found her, he was relieved to hear the answer was yes, since he’d already booked their first show at a music festival!

Since then, their bilingual performances have created a buzz in both the French and English communities. Just last year, Fire & Smoke won the People’s Choice Award at Chant’Ouest, Western Canada’s well known music competition featuring Francophone artists. Not bad, for a chance campfire singalong.

This concert at the very small and intimate venue known as the Folk Exchange was full of friends and family.

Georg Philipp Telemann – Partita II in G Major…

Some days ago I have made a new video with one movement from the Partita II in G major by Georg Philipp Telemann.

I have played this Partita for many years now, and every now and then I have liked to play the movements from this Partita on the mandolin. The key of G major is very well suited for the mandolin and the pieces are easy to play and do sound great.

This Partita is the second one from a set of 6 Partitas for violin, flute or oboe and B. C. (cello and piano or harpsichord) But the melodies are so beautiful, that it is possible to play the music also as a solo piece on the mandolin. A version for mandolin and guitar would be even better.

The complete sheet music for the 6 Partitas is available at the IMSLP site (see below). I have not tried out the other partitas yet, but I am sure that one or another would also sound great on the mandolin – just try it out!

This is my recording of the last movement Aria 6 – of the Partita II in G major

Telemann – Aria 6 for Mandolin Solo

The movements of the Partita are:

  • Siziliano
  • Aria 1 – Allegro
  • Aria 2 – Allegro
  • Aria 3 – Vivace
  • Aria 4 – Afettuoso
  • Aria 5 – Presto
  • Aria 6 – Tempo di Minuetto

I have found several videos of this Partita II in G major with recorder or flute at youtube and collected the videos in the following playlist. I have also added some movements from the other Partitas:

O.P.M. for Flute & Mandolin / Orie Sato

Some time ago I have discovered the following video of an interesting composition for flute and mandolin by composer Orie Sato.

The mandolin part is played by Anna Torge. I have met Anna Torge at the international mandolin symposium in Trossingen in 2008. Anna Torge is teaching the mandolin and is developping a way to use the Suzuki method for the mandolin.
