Mandolin Orange at Pickathon 2014 – Emily Frantz and…

MANDOLIN ORANGE are the North Carolina-born duo of Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin. They are both great singers and songwriters, and both great players on fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin.

I have just discovered a nice playlist with six songs from a concert given at Pickathon 2014. A great chance to listen to some of the beautiful songs with Mandolin Orange and the mandolin playing of Andrew Marlin.

I have compiled some more links with interviews and review, playlists and information about Mandolin Orange while I listened to some of their songs.

Enjoy the music of Mandolin Orange!

Folk Alley presents mandolin Orange (npr)

There is no shortage of folk and country songs about whiskey. But what makes this Mandolin Orange tune so enchanting is its effortlessness. The words seem to fall right into one another, like cheery drunks into so many bar stools. Mandolinist Andrew Marlin wrote this song during a road trip with his friend.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Mandolin Orange (The Bluegrass Situation)

MANDOLIN ORANGE are the North Carolina-born duo of Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin. One of the most remarkable pair of voices on the Americana scene today, Marlin and Frantz have quietly spent the past few years building their fan base through incessant touring and the release of two highly-acclaimed albums, Quiet Little Room and Haste Make/Hard Hearted Stranger. In anticipation of the Yep Roc release of their third album, This Side of Jordan, on August 20th, contributing writer Michael Verity spoke with Andrew about how he and Emily met, what it means to be compared to Gram Parsons and how their band contributed to a great new recording.

The quiet chemistry of Carrboro’s Mandolin Orange

“That’s so true,” says Marlin, after some contemplative silence. “We spend a lot of time just making sure that the arrangement of each song is as strong as it can possibly be because, with just two people, the song has to be arranged in such a way that it’s easy for us both to play our parts.”

Frank Turner: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert – With…

Frank Turner has givebn the following Tiny Desk Concert at the NPR. Matt Nasir who is mainly the piano player in Frank Turners band started to play the mandolin recently and he plays the mandolin in this concert. Three beautiful songs, with mandolin and guitar.

Frank Turner: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

The U.K. singer-songwriter and a bandmate are just two men with unplugged instruments, but they still convey the bawdy rowdiness of a full band. Performing three songs in the NPR Music offices, Turner shines in what may well be the most brightly lit performance space he’s ever graced.

For his Tiny Desk close-up, the U.K. singer-songwriter isn’t actually alone — he brings along the pianist in his band The Sleeping Souls, Matt Nasir, who joins in on mandolin — but Turner still does plenty to convey the bawdy rowdiness of a full band on his own. Opening with the terrifically anthemic, rehab-themed first single from his new album Tape Deck Heart (sample line: “On the first night we met, you said, ‘Well, darling, let’s make a deal/If anybody ever asks us, let’s just tell them that we met in jail'”), Turner shines in what may well be the most brightly lit performance space he’s ever graced. –STEPHEN THOMPSON

Lydia & Bettina – A German Duet with Mandolin…

Some time ago I have found an announcement for a concert with the Duo Lydia and Bettina. I had previously heard about this duo with mandolin and guitar, and so I searched for information about Lydia and Bettina.

This is how the duo presents itself on their website:

Translation: We are Lydia Rombach and Bettina Lehmann. We, that is a mandolin, a guitar and a soulful, impressing voice. Music has accompnied us for our whole life. For more than 10 years we are going this way together.

An evening with us is a musical travel from the 16th century until today. We are not fixed to a single style: rock, pop, classical – we play what we like to play. Without much technical equipment and in our own, easygoing way.

Both have played in a local mandolin orchestra. So they decided to use mandolin and guitar as well for their Duo.

I like the arrangements by Lydia and Bettina, the mandolin is used to make the arrangements brilliant and interesting, with single notes, tremolo or chords.

I hope that I will be able to visit one of the next concerts of this duo.

I have found four videos in the youtube Channel Lydik :

Wayfaring Stranger (Lydia und Bettina)

Robbie Williams Angels (Lydia und Bettina)

Mit diesem Video haben wir uns für das Triberger Weihnachtstalent beworben und haben dann nach einem Live Casting auch tatsächlich gewonnen.
Bettina an der Gitarre und mit Gesang und Lydia an der Mandoline.
