Pedro Chamorro is one of the leading bandurria players in Spain. He has recently published a new CD with solo works by Fabían Forero Valderrama for the bandurria.
Fabían Forero Valderrama is a composer from Columbia. He had the idea to use the Columbian bandola (which is very similar to the Spanish bandurria) as a solo instrument, inspired by the great solo works for guitar or violin. He has composed 22 studies for the bandola Andina Colombiana. Pedro Chamorro has selected 9 studies and one Capricho for his recording.
Some of the pieces of this CD are also available as youtube videos.
LATINOAMÉRICA DESDE FABIÁN FORERO VALDERRAMA
Musician, composer, conductor and professor for plucked instruments. Born in Madrid in 1961. Studies of music in Madrid, Barcelona and Esch-Alzette (Luxemburg). Studies of the bandurria with Manuel Grandío and studies of the mandolin with Juan Carlos Muñoz. Perfection of the mandolin with Marga Wilden-Hüsgen. National prize for bandurria «Manuel Grandío» 1976 und 1977.
This work deals with the life and work of one of the most popular bandurrists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Baldomero Cateura (1856-1929). The Spanish mandolin and its repertoire, the “trípode”, the strings, method and “piano-pedalier” are the main elements here treated; but, what really makes this research valuable is the Anthology by Baldomero Cateura (downloadable from the internet). In its slow and complicated elaboration, I have gathered 101 works, almost 1000 pages – some original and others adapted – most of which were given for losses. This repertoire is a valuable contribution to the repertoire of the “plucked Instruments”.
The work is illustrated with a large number of images and abundant information extracted from newspaper library. Includes the first biography of the bandurrist Carlos Terraza de Vesga. And despite the importance of its composer, brings to light the impressive work for spanish mandolin (bandurria model Cateura) by Manuel Burgés.

During the last days I have watched many videos with music of the Canary Islands – Gran Canaria or Tenerife. On the Canary Islands they have a tradition of mixed ensembles with plucked instruments – guitar, bandurria, laud and the typical instrument named timple. In most cases the ensemble is used to accompany one or more singers, and not for pure instrumental music like it is typical for the German mandolin orchestras.
Very often the music is joyfull, the players and the audience enjoy the music very much. Some of the pieces reminded me to the music that is played in Venezuela that is based on the same tradition as this music on the Canary Islands.

There is one video in the youtube channel of the Grupo Ayate of a piece for the 5-string timple of the Canary Islands and guitar. I have already watched many videos with music played by a timple and I have planned to write one of my next post especially about the timple of the Canary Islands.
