Raffaele Calace – Concerto for Mandolin – Katsia Prakopchyk / Kozo Onishi

The concerto op. 113 by Raffele Calace is my favorite romantic mandolin concerto since I have heard it on the CD with Alison Stephens and Steven Devine. This is a real masterpice by Raffaele Calace, and it is good, that this concerto ist played by the best mandolin players of today in their concerts.

Yesterday I have found several very good videos with this concerto.

This concerto was composed for mandolin and piano, but it can also be played with a full orchestra like in the first Video.

The first video is from a concert with Katsia Prakopchyk (mandolin) and the Minsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra.

Katsia Prakopchyk – biographical notes from her homepage:

was born in 1979 in Babruisk (Belarus). At the age of nine, she started to play the domra with Tatjana Varava and Jaraslau Valasiuk. After her first domra/mandolin studies with Nikolai Maretzki at the belarussian music academy in Minsk, she came to the university of music Cologne. There, a decisive influence on her musical development was Prof. Marga Wilden-Hüsgen with whom she finished her artistic instrumental education with distinction for the instruments mandolin and baroque mandolin. Under Prof. Caterina Lichtenberg she passed her concert examination.

More videos with Katsy Prakopchyk including some videos with barock mandolin can be found in the youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/Magnatt2000

Raffaele Calace Concerto 0p. 113 Marziale

Another very good recording of the complete concerto in the original version with piano accompanyment was made by Japanese mandolinist Kozo Onishi, winner of the 17th competition for mandolin of the Japan Mandolin Union in 2001.
