The Tar – An Important Long Neck Lute from…

If you need a break from the holiday music at the moment, maybe it is a good idea to listen to some music of a completely different culture.

I have collected some videos with an instrument that is used in Persia, Azerbaijan and Armenia – the tar. There are many more interesting videos, including some lessons on how to play the tar. You can use the youtube search links I have added at the end to find more!

In the Atlas of Plucked Instruments we can find the basic information about the tar:

The body of the Azeri tar has a double-bowl (figure-of-eight) shape, carved from one piece of mulberry wood. It lacks the slanting sides of the Iranian tar, and the top half is rounded. The front is a thin membrane of stretched bladder.

The neck is glued to the body (which has a strengthening stick through it) and a separate (quite large) square pegbox. The friction pegs (with big round knobs) are on both sides of the open pegbox. The frets are tied-on nylon (4 windings), with some in 1/4 note intervals (based on 17 intervals in an octave). These fret intervals differ from the Iranian tar.

It was published in 1899 by Carisch & Jänichen as vol. 18 of this series with popular melodies for the mandolin.

The second piece in this booklet is based on the aria Fra poco a me ricoveri from Lucia de Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti.

Fra poco a me ricovero von Donizetti.

I have found many videos of this aria. The first two videos are historic recordings of this aria. The mandolin version is almost exactly transcribed, but it is shortened a little bit at the end. For me it is very useful to listen to those videos to be able to play the melody in the right mood with all the tempo changes and fermatas.

It was published in 1899 by Carisch & Jänischen as vol. 18 of this series with popular melodies for the mandolin.

I have looked for youtube videos of the first three pieces which are based on opera arias by Donizetti and Bellini. I think listening to those arias could be very helpful to learn how to play this pieces on the mandolin.

The first piece is based on two melodies from the opera La Favorita by Gaetano Donizetti.

Here are some videos of the aria  Bei Raggi Lucenti from the opera La Favorita von Donizetti.

Donizetti – La Favorita – Air d’Ines: “Bei raggi lucenti…”

The second melodie is  Quando le soglie paterne vercai, this is a recording with Shirley Verret and Paolo Coni from 1991:

I will present videos of the melodies of the second and third piece from this Repertorio del Mandolinista within the next days.
