Enrico Marucelli – Valtzer Fantastico and other Compositions for…

Enrico Marucelli (1877 – 1907) was a bass player, guitarist, mandolin player, conductor and successfull composer. He was born in Florence and played in the Reale Circolo Mandolinistico Regina Margherita where he met several other famous mandolin players like Bianchi, Graziani-Walter, Matini and Carlo Munier.

During the 1890s he went to London as a popular teacher and conductor. He conducted a Ladies Guitar and Mandolin BandRimembranze d’Amore is dedicated to this early mandolin orchestra. In the year 1900 Marucelli conducted an en masse orchestra  with 500 players, during this concert Marucelli’s composition Spagnola has been performed.

Enrico Marucelli has also published two mandolin methods (I am still looking to get those methods…) and a guitar method.

Valtzer Fantastico

The most famous composition by Marucelli is the Valtzer Fantastico which is dedicated to Eduardo Mazzacapo.

My favorite video with the Valtzer Fantastico – played by Mathieu Sarthe-Mouréou and Yann Pistien, played on a Vinaccia mandolin built in 1910.

Capriccio Zingaresco

Another famous piece by Enrico Marucelli is the Capriccio Zingaresco.

This is the fantastic recording with Detlef Tewes and Boris Bagger from the CD Romantic Mandolin Moments:

The “Orchestre à Plectres du Sud-Ouest” conducted by Florentino…

In France there has been a very positive developement of the mandolin music during the last years. Like in Germany regional mandolin orchestras have been organized to improve the skills of the players of the local mandolin orchstras.

In 2011 there was a workshop for a national mandolin orchestra with Florentino Calvo and Vincent Beer-Demander teaching mandolin and mandola, and Jean-Marc Zvellenreuther teaching the guitar. Mandolin and guitar players from France could apply to take part in this workshop.

I have found videos of the  Orchestre à Plectres du Sud-Ouest, the regional mandolin orchestra from the south-west of France, conducted by Florentino Calvo.

This regional orchestra has played an interesting program with original compositions for mandolin orchestra. In 2009 the orchestra has played during the Week of the Mandolin (Semaine de la Mandoline). In the following video you can hear two folk dances by Robert Schulz:

Two Folk Dances

Deux danses populaires de Robert Schulz, interprétées le 1er novembre à Tarbes à l’occasion de la semaine de la mandoline. Orchestre à plectres régional, direction Florentino Calvo.

A great version of the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby for mandolin orchestra:

Eleanor Rigby

Célèbre morceau des Beatles joué le 19 juillet 2009, lors du VIIe Festival International Mandol’in Ariège de Saint-Girons. Direction Florentino Calvo.

Very interesting is the Suite Petit Bal des Bêtes composed by Vincent Beer-Demander, this is the first movement of this suite:

La Serenade – Valse Espagnole – A Famous Spanish…

Olivier Metra has composed some famous and often played pieces. La Serenade – a Spanish Waltz –  is one  of his big successes

I had previously heard the name Metra because some of his compositions are played by mandolin orchestras. But I haqve never played or really recognized one of Metras compositions.

But some time ago I could by a pack of sheet music that had belonged to a mandolin orchestra, and in this pack I found the music for La Serenade – Valse Espagnole by Olivier Metra. Metra died in 1889, and so the copyright for his compositions has expired.

So I have decided to add a scan of the music for La Serenade by Olivier Metra for mandolin orchestra (mandolin 1 and 2, mandola, guitar) to my page with free sheet music for the mandolin.

La Serenade is a composition that is very well suited for mandolin and guitar or mandolin orchestra, and I am sure that the audience will like La Serenade if it is played well.

I have found some videos of La Serenade at youtube. My favorite version is this video with Ralf Leen (mandolin) and Yvonne Azaert (guitar)

Ralf Leenen, mandolin (Embergher N°7-1900 ex-Ranieri)
Yvonne Azaert, guitar (Ramirez III – 1976)

Another interesting video is the following version played by the Victor Orchestra played from an old 78 record. I do especially like the Spanish snappers that are used to create the typical Spanish mood in this performance:
