Jean und Janvier Pietrapertosa <\/strong>belong to the mandolin players and mandolin teachers that helped to make the mandolin popular in the region of Paris in France around 1900.Both have written important mandolin methods , they have composed their own pieces and and arranged the popular music of the time.<\/p>\n

Until today not much is known about the biographies of father and son Pietrapertosa. In many cases no difference is made between the two as if it was just one person namend J. Pietrapertosa.<\/p>\n

I have recently found a document – a dictionary about the contemporaries – that contains short biographies of both – the father Jean Pietrapertos<\/strong>a and his son Janvier Pietrapertosa<\/strong>. The book that can be found in the French National Library bnf is dated to 1906, the copy from archive.org is dated to some years later.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9j\u00e0, dans sa ville natale o\u00f9 il accomplit ses \u00e9tudes, M. Pietrapertosa s’\u00e9tait fait conna\u00eetre comme mandoliniste solo, lorsqu’en 1882, il vint en France, o\u00f9 il acclimata bient\u00f4t son instrument, qui y \u00e9tait presque tomb\u00e9 en oubli. Il devint, peu de temps apr\u00e8s, mandoliniste solo de l’Op\u00e9ra-Comique, puis de l’Op\u00e9ra.<\/p>\n

M. Pietrapertosa a \u00e9crit plusieurs compositions pour la mandoline, dont les plus importantes sont la Nuit d’automne et la Marche du Mandoliniste. Il est l’auteur, en collaboration avec M. Alissa, de la musique de Mariage galante, op\u00e9ra-comique de MM. Oswald et Boucheron, repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 l’Olympia en 1892, et d’une M\u00e9thode de Mandoline.<\/p>\n

Already, in his hometown where he completed his studies, Mr. Pietrapertosa had made himself known as a solo mandolinist, when in 1882 he came to France, where he soon acclimated his instrument, which had almost fallen into oblivion.<\/span> He became, shortly thereafter, solo mandolinist of the Op\u00e9ra-Comique, then of the Opera.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pietrapertosa has written several compositions for the mandolin, the most important of which are the “Nuit d’automne” and “Marche du Mandoliniste” .<\/span> He is the author, in collaboration with M. Alissa, of the music of Mariage galante, op\u00e9ra-comique by MM. Oswald and Boucheron, represented at Olympia in 1892, and a Mandolin Method.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

He also owes the invention of an improved system of mandolin and a pedal console.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Naturalized French in 1892, Mr. Pietrapertosa is decorated with Medjidie and various other orders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Musicien, n\u00e9 \u00e0 Naples (Italie) le 5 f\u00e9vrier 1873. Fils du pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, il vint \u00e0 Paris avec son p\u00e8re et se fit naturaliser fran\u00e7ais en 1892.<\/p>\n

M. Pietrapertosa fils avait montr\u00e9, d\u00e8s sa jeunesse, de brillantes dispositions musicales. A l’\u00e2ge de sept ans, il ex\u00e9cutait sur le violon les compositions des ma\u00eetres de cet instrument. Il fut l’\u00e9l\u00e8ve de MM. Brun et J. Monti pour le violon et de M. Guido Spinetti pour le piano et l’harmonie.<\/p>\n

Seul il apprit \u00e0 jouer de la mandoline et, peu \u00e0 peu, sa pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour cet instrument se marqua d\u00e9finitivement. Il a, lui aussi, grandement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 remettre en honneur la mandoline, dont il sait tirer des effets particuliers, non-seulement comme instrument isol\u00e9, mais aussi comme partie d’orchestre ; il a, en effet, introduit tr\u00e8s heureusement cet instrument dans les concerts organis\u00e9s avec les \u00e9l\u00e8ves du cours r\u00e9put\u00e9 qu’il dirige lui-m\u00eame \u00e0 Paris.<\/p>\n

M. Pietrapertosa fils, compositeur distingu\u00e9 el s\u00e9cond, a publi\u00e9 plus de six cents compositions ou arrangements pour la mandoline. On cite surtout de lui les morceaux suivants : Freia-Gavottte, Naples joyeux, la Boite \u00e0 musique, Transvaal-Marchc, la C\u00f4te-d’Or, valse; R\u00e9gina, mazurka ; Gavotte-Regence, Petite Causette, le Val des Cygnes, la Marche des Mandolines, Tu n’en auras pas, Retour des Man\u0153uvres, Echos des Alpes; puis des arrangements sur les op\u00e9ras de Guillaume Tell. Rigoletto, etc. On conna\u00eet aussi de cet auteur des chansons, romances, m\u00e9lodies, morceaux pour piano et chant : Retraite aux flambeaux. Pourquoi t’en vas-tu, A Venise, etc.<\/p>\n

En 1903, M. Pietrapertosa fils a fait para\u00eetre une importante et tr\u00e8s compl\u00e8te M\u00e9thode de Mandoline, r\u00e9sultat de son exp\u00e9rience et r\u00e9sumant son excellent enseignement; cette m\u00e9thode est destin\u00e9e, dit son auteur. \u00ab \u00e0 tout l\u00e9 monde, non-seulement \u00e0 ceux qui d\u00e9sirent pousser l’\u00e9tude de l’instrument au summum, mais encore et tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cialement \u00e0 oute personne qui n’aurait encore aucune notion de musique ; elle s’efforce, dans ce but, d’entrer dans des d\u00e9tails tr\u00e8s explicites des th\u00e9ories musicales et de technique sur la mandoline. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Membre de divers concours musicaux, il pr\u00e9sidait celui qui eut ses assises \u00e0 Grenoble en 1903, et pour lequel il composa un morceau impos\u00e9 au prix d’honneur ; ce morceau, tr\u00e8s acclam\u00e9, fut un succ\u00e8s de plus pour son auteur.<\/p>\n

M. Pietrapertosa fils dirige la \u00ab Estudiantina Lombarde \u00bb, une des plus brillantes soci\u00e9t\u00e9s de mandoline de Paris. Il est officier d’Acad\u00e9mie.<\/p>\n

M. Pietrapertosa Jr. had shown, from his youth, brilliant musical arrangements. <\/span>At the age of seven, he performed on the violin the compositions of the <\/span>masters of this instrument. <\/span>He was a pupil of MM. <\/span>Brun and J. Monti for violin and M. Guido Spinetti for piano and harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only he learned to play the mandolin and, little by little, his preference for this instrument was definitively marked. <\/span>He, too, has greatly contributed to the reverence of the mandolin, from which he derives special effects, not only as an isolated instrument, but also as part of an orchestra; <\/span>he has, indeed, very happily introduced this instrument into the concerts organized with the pupils of the famous course which he himself directs in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Pietrapertosa Jr., also a distinguished composer, has published more than six hundred compositions or arrangements for the mandolin. <\/span>The following pieces are especially quoted from him: Freia-Gavottte, Merry Naples, La Boite \u00e0 musique, Transvaal-Marchc, the C\u00f4te-d’Or, waltz; <\/span>Regina, mazurka; <\/span>Gavotte-Regence, Little Causette, the Val des Cygnes, the March of the Mandolins, You will not have any, Return of Maneuvers, Echoes of the Alps; <\/span>then arrangements on the operas of William Tell. <\/span>Rigoletto, etc. <\/span>We also know from this author songs, romances, melodies, pieces for piano and singing: Torchlight Retreat. <\/span>Why do you go to Venice?<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1903, M. Pietrapertosa Jr. published an important and complete Mandolin Method, the result of his experience and summarizing his excellent teaching; <\/span>this method is intended, says its author. <\/span>“To all the world, not only to those who wish to push the study of the instrument to the pinnacle, but also and especially to anyone who still has no notion of music; <\/span>for this purpose, it endeavors to enter into very explicit details of the musical and technical theories on the mandolin. <\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

Member of various musical competitions, he presided over the one who had his seat in Grenoble in 1903, and for which he composed a piece imposed at the price of honor; <\/span>this piece, highly acclaimed, was another success for its author.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Pietrapertosa Jr. leads the “Estudiantina Lombarde”, one of the most successful mandolin companies in Paris. <\/span>He is an Academy Officer.<\/span><\/p>\n
