With eight accomplished musicians from Argentina and Uruguay, and a sound rooted in tango traditions, Bajofondo lays out a visual and aural feast. Led by Oscar and Grammy winner Gustavo Santaolalla, the group mashes up traditional candombe sounds and other forms with electronica to produce a mix that’s hypnotic and danceable.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Julian Lage Trio – Toast of the Nation<\/h2>\n
The guitarist Julian Lage came to prominence as a child prodigy; still a young twenty-something, he’s become a thoughtful composer and bandleader too. With his working quintet, the Julian Lage Group, he developed two cinematic, expansive albums, including 2011’s Gladwell<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Noam Pikelny and Friends on Mountain Stage<\/h2>\n
Punch Brothers member Noam Pikelny brings an assortment of friends and bandmates to his first appearance on Mountain Stage<\/em>, recorded live in Charleston, W.V. In 2010, Steve Martin awarded Pikelny the first-ever “Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass,” describing Pikelny as “a player of unlimited range and astonishing precision.” With Punch Brothers and elsewhere, Pikelny pushes the sound of his own instrument to places other players dare not venture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fleet Foxes<\/h2>\n
This is the first radio session the members of Fleet Foxes performed in support of their sophomore album, Helplessness Blues<\/em>, and I think we know why: Frankly, they’re not morning people. The band let us know this by jokingly calling our show, Morning Becomes When It’s Difficult To Sing Well<\/em>. (Or something along those lines.)<\/p>\n
Still, these guys turned out a gorgeous set of music, with their harmonies fully intact. The songs sounded even better live than on the album \u2014 especially “Grown Ocean,” “Battery Kinzie” and our old favorite, “Mykonos.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John Ellis, Darcy James Argue On JazzSet<\/h2>\n

Brooklyn, N.Y., is the current home of John Ellis \u2014 raised in North Carolina and once a student in New Orleans \u2014 and Darcy James Argue, from Canada and once a student in Boston. They’re both on the main stage at the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Regina Spektor in Concert<\/h2>\n
The warmly eclectic singer-songwriter Regina Spektor played old favorites and introduced fans to highlights from her lovely new album, What We Saw From the Cheap Seats, <\/em>in a concert, recorded live from Le Poisson Rouge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Fox Hunt On Mountain Stage<\/h2>\n
The string band The Fox Hunt<\/a> returns to Mountain Stage<\/em> to dispense more dirt-laden tales of drinking, cheating and damnation around a single shared condenser microphone. Led by singer-songwriter John R. Miller, the Martinsburg, W.V., group assimilates influences that begin with early-20th-century string-band music and end with a variety of punk and rock.<\/p>\n
Formed in 2006, the group supports its harmonies with mandolin, banjo and fiddle. In 2010, the band released its third album, Long Way to Go<\/em>. Upon returning from a tour of Ireland this spring, The Fox Hunt became the first act to sell out the Shepherdtown, W.V., Opera House. On the road 150 days a year, the band has amassed a loyal following, and was recently featured on CNN.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Newport Folk 2011: Chris Thile & Michael Daves, Live In Concert<\/h2>\n
Chris Thile enjoyed massive success at a very early age, selling millions with the prodigiously gifted bluegrass band Nickel Creek. But he’s remained remarkably level-headed and creatively ambitious in the five years since the group’s demise, exploring his more progressive leanings in Punch Brothers and teaming up with Michael Daves for a more traditional collection paying tribute to past bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and fellow Newport artist Earl Scruggs. Sleep With One Eye Open<\/em>, their album together, may look to the past, but make no mistake: This is blazingly intense music, and it’ll show live when they take the stage at the 2011 Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Punch Brothers On Mountain Stage<\/h2>\n
Mandolin player Chris Thile is better known for his role in Nickel Creek, but in 2010, it was all about his new band, Punch Brothers, and the group’s second album, Antifogmatic<\/em>.<\/p>\n
The band \u2014 Thile on mandolin, Noam Pikelny on banjo, Paul Kowert on bass, Gabe Witcher on fiddle and Chris Eldrige on guitar \u2014 uses standard bluegrass instrumentation in songs that are anything but conventional. The music on Antifogmatic <\/em>is adventurous and complex while remaining thoughtful and personal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jenny Scheinman – Violin<\/h2>\n
Composer and violinist Jenny Scheinman has a new band called Mischief and Mayhem. Perhaps the mischief part comes where hazy, dreamy grooves from the Heartland meet the experimental jazz quirks of Brooklyn. Certainly, it’s a band capable of raucous and rocking mayhem, thanks in part to the presence of Nels Cline, the man Wilco hired to perform its guitar freakouts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trampled By Turtles On Mountain Stage<\/h2>\n
Born as a duo between singer-songwriter Dave Simmonett and mandolin player Erik Berry, Trampled By Turtles grew into a group that quickly gained a reputation for lively stage shows and eccentric instrumental arrangements. The band outgrew its home base in Duluth, Minn., and has been on the road recently with The Infamous Stringdusters, who also appeared on this Mountain Stage<\/em> show.<\/p>\n
The session includes songs culled mostly from the group’s breakthrough record Palamino<\/em>, its fifth release, and includes two songs \u2014 “Feed and Bones” and “Wait So Long” \u2014 not originally heard on the radio broadcast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
