Paulo Flores & Cambanda Jazz Combo – Some Choros…

The following videos show the documentation of a concert with some choro tunes played by Paulo Flores & Cambanda Jazz Combo. It shows some historic recordings and the new versions. I liked those 4 videos very much. In the last video the choro Boneca is played, a choro that I have just added to my page about the Songbook Choro which I am currently reworking: http://www.mandoisland.de/choro_songbook.html

Beatles’n’Choro – Beatles Songs with Bandolim, Cavaquinho, Clarinet and…

During the last days I have looked for some interesting choro music, and I have discovered a project titled Beatles’n’Choro. 4 CDs with Beatlessongs played by Brazilian Choro musicians with clarinet, flute, cavaquinho, bandolim, violao and pandeiro.

On the bandolim we can hear Hamilton de Holanda who plays a nice arrangement of Something on the bandolim:

A Brazilian project of The Beatles music in Choro, a traditional brazilian music.

You can find several videos with titles from this project, but there are also other videos of Beatlessongs played by choro ensembles. Here is a group who has three videos of Beatlessongs at youtube:

I Wanna Hold Your Hand – Chorinho

Apresentação do grupo de choro no espetáculo “The Beatles” da Academia de Dança Regina Dell’Aquila – Teatro do Shopping Centro – São José dos Campos – SP – Dez/09. Marcelo Furlan (violão), Serginho Petroni (bandolim), Matheus Modesto (surdo) e Eduardo Galvani (pandeiro). Produção Vídeo Marina.

Finaly I have found some interesting videos at myspace – here as an example the song Eleonor Rigby played with bandolim, violao and pandeiro:

Benzinho – A Great Choro by Jacob do Bandolim…

Benzinho is Chor No. 15 in the Songbook Choro which contains 97 typical Choros from Brazil. This is one of the often played and well known Choros by Jacob do Bandolim.

Here are some videos of Benzinho. First I have a typical Brazilian version from a pub with a lot of noise – but thats how it sounds in Brazil:

Benzinho

Then a version with two guitars, a more jazzy version:

Michele Ramo & Howard Alden “Benzinho”

Finally a version by a group named Choro Bandido, with the solo played on a violin – not very typical for Brazilian choro – but very interesting:

Choro Bandido – Benzinho

You can find a lot of other versions of Benzinho at youtube – which is your favorite version?

Roda de Choro de Lisboa

Edu Miranda has uploaded three new videos to youtube. This time he plays the bandolim in the Roda de Choro de Lisboa. The videos have been taken from a recent TV show.

I like the version of Brejeiro by Ernesto Nazareth very much. It is not played too fast, but with a lot of rhythm and energy. And Edu Miranda makes clear that he can really play – his bandolim solos are very well played.

Roda de Choro de Lisboa – Brejeiro (Ernesto Nazareth) e Malhão de Águeda

I do also like the two other videos of the Roda de Choro de Lisboa, which is composed of 3 musicians from Portugal, on French and one Brazilian player. The accordeon in the group is not very typical for choro music, but it fits in very well and makes a good contrast to the clarinet.

Roda de Choro de Lisboa – Carioquinha (Waldir Azevedo)

Noites Cariocas by Jacob do Bandolim is played by a quartett with 7-stringed guitar (Violao), bandolim, pandeiro and accordeon:

Carlos Lopes, Acordeão ;

Nuno Gamboa, Violão 7 cordas ;

Alexandre Santos, pandeiro ;

Edu Miranda, bandolim

The following video is a presentation of the Roda de Choro de Lisboa. It is interesting to see that the group does also play for dancing. Unfortunately I do not understand much of the Portuguese text:

There are many other videos of the Roda de Choro de Lisboa from former years with another player of the bandolim. You can find the videos easy from the myspace site of the group.
