New Videos by the Mandolinenclub Falkenstein, conducted by Natalia…

The mandolin orchestra Mandolinenclub Falkenstein was founded in 1925. In 1965 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary the orchestra organized fir the first time an international competition for mandolin orchestras. Other competitions were organized over the years. Currently the orchestra consists of ca. 20 members.

The orchestra was conducted by Keith Harris between 2001 and 2009. Recently Natalia Alencova, a mandolinist and domra player originally from Russia and now living in Germany has taken over the direction of this orchestra.

The orchestra played a concert in Berlin on October 18th, and has uploaded three interesting videos from this concert to its youtube channel.

The Marionette Mandolin Orchestra from Japan plays Compositions by…

The Marionette Mandolin Orchestra from Japan has recently added 10 videos to its youtube channel. The titles of those interesting pieces are difficult to get because they are only given in Japanese language. But I think that all the pieces are original compositions by Yuasa Takashi und Yoshida Goshi.

Yuasa Takashi and Yoshida Goshi have been playing together as the duo Marionette for many years – with portuguese guitar and liuto or guitar. The have played especially the Fado music from Portgal. They have recorded many CDs and travelled around the world with success.

In 2006  Yoshida has founded the Marionette Mandolin Orchestra:

In 2006 Yoshida produced the Marionette Mandolin Orchestra, a group made up of 100 musicians performing on a variety of instruments, including the mandolin. The group experiments with new styles of mandolin music.

On the homepage of Marionette you can find information about the duo as well as information about the orchestra. You can also find a list of compositions that are available for purchase.

The music by the Marionette Mandolin Orchestras sounds very nice, with influence from folk music – I can hear Spanish and Portuguese influences – but also with influences from pop music. I think that those pieces are interesting for other mandolin orchestras, especially for young players.

The Marionette Mandolin Orchestra is located in the city of  Takatsuki, Takatsuki is located just between Osaka and Kyoto.

Takatsuki (高槻市, Takatsuki-shi?) is a city located in Osaka, Japan.

As of 2010, the city has an estimated population of 353,881 and the density of 3,360 persons per km². The total area is 105.31 km².

The city was founded on January 1, 1943 and is located almost directly between Kyoto and Osaka. Due to the convenience of being 13-15 minutes away from Kyoto and Osaka by train respectively, the city has developed exponentially during the last 20 years. It is a commuter town, with people commuting to both Kyoto and Osaka.

I had some problems to decide which pieces I should add as examples – I recommend to listen to all the 10 pieces if you have enough time!

Here are three examples:

Suite “Funabashi store”

Nishi Azuma – Halluzinationen – Xavier Wallfahrt

Mandoline Bar Night

Marionette – Yuasa Takashi und Yoshida Goshi

Videos with the duo Marionette – portuguese guitar and liuto or guitar

Guitarra Portuguesa/Coimbra コインブラ/Marionette

Guitarra Portuguesa/Longe ao Zipangu 南蛮渡来/Marionette

Great Saiya Mandolin Ensemble – A young Mandolin Orchestra…

The Great Saiya Mandolin Ensemble is a young Japanese mandolin ensemble. After only 5 years the orchestra has already reached a high standard.

The fifth regular concert of the  Great Saiya Mandolin Ensemble was given on Oct. 2nd. The complete concert was streamed by ustream and has also been recorded. The videos of the concert are now available at ustream.

This orchestra plays with a lot of energy. The program was mainly composed of Japanese compositions of recent years and therefore is very interesting.

At the moment the 3rd piece of the concert was taken out from the video, it is planned to make it available as soon as the permission by the composer was given.

For me this concert was very interesting. It gives a great impression about new developements in the mandolin music in Japan of today.

The concert has been recorded completely including the intermission. You can skip the intermission of the second part and jump directly to the beginning of the second part – the time of the beginning of the pieces is given in the comment.

1. Sulla Piana della Melia, Ouverture per Estudiantina / Giuseppe Manente/arranged by Jiro Nakano
2. Prelude 2 / Hidenori Yoshimizu
3. Spirit of Planet – for mandolin orchestra / Daigo Marumoto (zur Zeit nicht verfügabr)
4. Ride! / S.Hazo/arranged by GSME

Encore: Tong-poo / Ryuichi Sakamoto

Enjoy the 5th concert of the Great Saiya Mandolin Ensemble!

(I had first embedded the ustream videos, but I had the impression that this did not work properly – the videos started loding and playing automatically although this was not wanted – so I have replaced the embedded videos by the links to the videos)
