Mandolin Music at youtube – Alison Stephens

Youtube is trying to get a share from the streaming of complete CDs. Complete CDs are beeing added to the youtube content – usually with ADs to make some money. You can find those CDs mostly using the Artist Theme collections. As those CDs are not so easy to find I am planning to present some important CDs in my blog. You can probably find those CDs also on Spotify, but I do usually prefer to listen to youtube.

I would like to start with Alison Stephens. You can find most of Alison Stephens’ CDs now on the following page: Alison Stephens – Theme
Under the tab “Playlists” you can find playlists for the Calace CD and the CD tapestry by Duo Mandala.

I have made my own playlists for the following CDs:

Raffaele Calace – Mandolin Concertos No. 1 and 2, Rapsodia Napoletana – Alison Stephens and Steven Devine (Piano)

Souvenirs – Alison Stephens (Mandolin) and Craig Ogden (Guitar)

duo mandala – tapestry – Alison Stephens (Mandolin) and Lauren Scott (harp)

Tony Williamson – Mandolin Virtuoso – Musical Instrument Expert…

Today I read a long post about Tony Williamson. He just received the North Carolina Heritage Award.

Announced as a 2018 North Carolina Heritage Award recipient, Williamson, from Chatham County, is described as “a visionary musician, composer, musical instrument expert, teacher and mentor.” He blends multiple genres but still remains rooted in bluegrass.

The following video is a presentation of Tony Williamson.

Music is the backdrop of his life. Enjoy filmmaker Rodrigo Dorfman’s short documentary on 2018 North Carolina Heritage Awardee Tony Williamson.

Tone is a real expert for vintage instruments. He can tell many stories about the instruments and their history. He has given many presentations with vintage instruments and has recorded some great albums.

You can watch Tony Williamson and some great old mandolins in my playlist. The first four videos are from a presentation in the North Carolina Museum of History, Tony Williamson shows and plays a Gibson F5 mandolins, an F4 mandolin and a K2 mandocello.

Nigel Woodhouse presents the Mandolin

I have recently discovered this great video produced by the Philharmonia Orchestra from London (UK) with Nigel Woodhouse.

Nigel Woodhouse is a guitarist who does also play the mandolin, the banjo and other fretted instruments.

Nigel plays a Neapolitan (or Roman) mandolin based on a mandolin by Luigi Embergher and made for Nigel in 1993 by Japanese maker Yoshihiko Takusari. He also plays an A-style mandolin built by Mike Vanden. You can find some pictures of the two mandolins on Nigel’s website.

Nigel presents examples by Mozart, Mahler, Webern, Strawinsky, Prokofiev, Respighi and other important composers who used the mandolin in a symphony orchestra. He also shows the most important features and playing techniques of the mandolin.

In this film, Nigel Woodhouse introduces the mandolin. The mandolin has been used by many composers across the centuries to give special colour to the orchestra, often evoking folk music.
