The adventures of the Duyfken: Suite for mandolin orchestra…

Recently I have found some videos of a new composition for mandolin orchestra and percussion by Australian composer Richard Charlton: The adventures of the Duyfken

The vessel Duyfken was a Dutch ship that was the first ship to reach Australia in 1606:

In 1606, the small Dutch ship Duyfken sailed from the Indonesian island of Banda in search of gold and trade opportunities on the fabled island of Nova Guinea.

Under the command of Willem Janszoon, Duyfken and her crew ventured south-east. They sailed beyond Os Papuas (Papua New Guinea) and explored and chartered part of the coast of Nova Guinea. They did not find gold – but they did find the northern coast of a huge continent: Australia. Captain Janszoon was the first European to map and record Australia in history so Duyfken‘s voyage marks the beginning of Australia’s recorded history.

Richard Charlton composed The adventures of the Duyfken in 2007:

“Commissioned by Geoffrey Barber with funds from the Australian Mandolin Music Association…”–P. i.

The first two videos show a performance by the dutch mandolin orchestra Eerste Schiedamse Mandolineorkest ONI:

The next two videos were played by the West Australian Mandolin Orchestra conducted by Robert Schulz. The WAMO announces on its homepage that it will travel to France and Germany in June 2010 – I guess that the orchestra will also play at the big Eurofestival in Bruchsal.

Finally another video with one movement of this suite played by the British group Fretful Federation:

Koray Berat Sari, Baglama and Mandolin Orchestra Jugenzupforchester NRW

I found the following video and as it is a very rare combination I want to present it in my blog.

Last year a special compoetition for the Baglama – an instrument popular in Turkey and played by many immigrants from Turkey in Germany as well – was included in the German competition for young musicians Jugend Musiziert. The orchestra was conducted by Dr. Christian de Witt.

There is a press release about this (in German)

Baglama

Informations about the baglama from Turkey or more precisely the baglama saz can be found in the Atlas of Plucked Instruments.

http://www.atlasofpluckedinstruments.com/middle_east.htm

This is the most well-known Turkish plucked instrument. It comes in several different sizes : the small cura saz, the baglama saz, the bigger divan saz and the biggest : the meydan saz. Nowadays you can also find an electric saz. The baglama (pronounce : bah-lahma) is the most popular. In Iran and Azerbaijan this instrument may be called chogur, choghur or çogur.

Orchestra mandolinistica di Lugano – Palladio by Karl Jenkins…

The ‘Orchestra mandolinistica di Lugano’ (Ticino, southern Switzerland) is probably the best mandolin orchestra in Switzerland today. More than 40 pieces played by this mandolin orchestra are available as youtube videos, including original traditional Italian mandolin music by Calace, Munier or Mezzacapo, original compositions for the modern mandolin orchestra like the Capriccio by Hans Gal and the important Suite No. 6 by Hermann Ambrosius, arrangements of famous pieces like the Radetzky march, the Pink Panther Theme or West Side Story, pieces by Karl Jenkins or Hans Badelt, solo concertos for guitar, oboe and harp, and also typical folk music from different countries like Brazil, Venezuela or Italy.

Many of the arrangements were made for this orchestra by Mauro Pacchin who has been conducting this orchestra since 1990 and who has also composed some new pieces for this orchestra.

The ‘Orchestra mandolinistica di Lugano’ (Ticino, southern Switzerland) was founded in 1990 and is conducted by Mauro Pacchin ever since. About 30 amateur musicians play in 6 different sections. The orchestra performed over 360 concerts in Switzerland and abroad and produced 9 CDs. The youth orchestra ‘OML Junior’, conducted by Nicola Bühler, features ‘under20’ members; some of them also play in the major orchestra.

I have selected some videos for this thread – if you like those you should go to the youtube channel of the OML to find all the other videos.

Yasuo Kuwahara – Beyond the Rainbow – Mandolin Orchestra…

Some days ago I have discovered the videos of a Spanish orchestra:  La Orden de la Terraza

This orchestra was founded in the region of Logrono / Rioja / Spain in the 70s. In Logrono every year a big festival of plucked instrument music takes place.

The performance of  Beyond the Rainbow by Yasuo Kuwahara has fascinated me immediately, and I had to listen to this for several times.

This orchestra plays excellent and very precise. The orchestra is composed of the typical Spanish plucked instruments bandurria and laud and guitars.

Yasuo Kuwahara was a Japanese mandolin player and composer. He has composed many pieces for plucked strings ensembles and also for mandolin solo.

More information can be found here: Yasuo Kuwahara

The orchestra La Orden de la Terraza has played several compositions by Kuwahara, you can find some information about this also on the homepage of the orchestra.
