Cape Breton Sessions

Today I would like to present the website Cape Breton Sessions in Ottawa. Each week musicians meet for a session with folk tunes from Cape Breton. The music which is regularly played is available as a book of sheet music with today 52 sets of three to six tunes each.

Recordings from the Cape Breton Session have been made available in the youtube channel. As an example I have selected the following video with a slow tune that’s a favorite of mine – Hector the Hero. The text for the video says: “Parker Duchemin, one of the regulars at the session plays Hector the Hero for a visiting friend of his. The rest of the group joins in partway through.”

Website: http://www.cbsession.com
The sheet music can be found on page “Tunes”, search for “Full Book” to get the complete book as one document. You can also find a collection of popular Christmas tunes.

Alan Snyder’s Cape Breton Fiddle Recording Index

On the website of the Cape Breton Session you can also find a link to the website by Alan Snyder who has compiled a huge database of recordings of Cape Breton tunes. You can find also the beginning of each tune in sheet music and a midi version of the tune.

A lot of informations as well as sheet music compilations can be found on the website Cranford Publication: http://www.cranfordpub.com/
Cranford Publications specializes in Celtic fiddle music from Cape Breton, Ireland and Scotland. Proprietor Paul Cranford is a fiddler, composer and retired lightousekeeper well-grounded in the traditions of music he sells, performs and arranges.”

Finally a playlist with Cape Breton tunes that I have compiled.

Some time ago I have found the youtube channel of Anne Delong. Anne Delong is a mandolin player from Ontario, Canada. She is also composing fiddle tunes and other melodies. She is presenting her tunes as recordings with sheet music in her youtube channel. You can easily play along with the video or make a screenshot to get a printed version of the music. Anne Delong has pubished two books with her compositions, you can find details about the books on her website.

Anne Delong is a retired teacher-librarian and computer resource teacher which helped definitifely to present her compositions as youtube videos and on her website. She is also maintaining several websites like the website of the Mandolin Society of Peterborough.

Mike Cole and Anne Delong played at a small festival in Whitevale, Ontario in September, 2018 along with a number of other musical groups and solo artists. This video shows Anne Delong with Mike Cole.

Glen Duncan – A Master of the Bluegrass Fiddle

Glen Duncan is a fiddle player who has played with Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Johnny Cash and other important Bluegrass and Country musicians , and he has done a lot of studio work in Nashville.

I have recently compiled a playlist with videos with Glen Duncan.

Glen Duncan: A Standout Fiddler in a Crowd of Pickers

“There”s thirteen-hundred and fifty-two guitar pickers in Nashville, and they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee anthill.”

No player in Nashville is more capable than Glen Duncan. A multi-instrumentalist who specializes in fiddle, Duncan’s discography contains more album titles than some people’s entire CD collections.

Sugar in the Gourd – A great fiddle tune

Today I have played some tunes from Butch Baldassari’s book 30 Fiddle Tunes for Mandolin Taught by Butch Baldassari – including a tune named “Sugar in the Gourd” which was fun to play.

I have looked for some youtube videos and found some great performances of this tune as well as some very old recordings like the following recorded in 1930:

SUGAR IN THE GOURD by Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers with Riley Puckett and Clayton McMichen. Recorded in 1930. Good, old timey foot stompin’ hillbilly music. Enjoy!

Sugar in the Gourd is an oldtime tune, but it is also a tune that can be played in a bluegrass style. It is mostly played by the fiddle, the other instruments are mostly playing the acompaniment.

I recommend that you listen to my playlist and select your favorite version of the tune. The tune is a fast tune, a good tune to practice speed.

Sugar in the gourd was the song of the week in the Mandolin Cafe in May 2012 – in the thread about this tune you can find more information and other videos with mandolins.

I can recommend the Butch Baldassari book – the tunes are all great to play and the CD that comes with the book helps to play the tunes properly.
